Medium Stephen Wakeling Answers Your Questions
Date: 21 January 2014
Thanks for the question, one that at the outset appears to be simple, though held within is a great depth. Because of this I will answer as simply as I can, to make things easier to grasp...
First of all there are, in my opinion, too many people who take more interest in the past rather than living the NOW... Yes, there is mixed opinion about past lives and reincarnation. Nonetheless I, for one, see reincarnation as a natural way to unfold one's spiritual capacity whilst working for the benefit of the great purpose of humanity, particularly when you comprehend the idea, we are all part of the same great family.
Now back to your question. Taking the literal point that you believe in reincarnation and you have lived a past life, would you imagine that you did everything right? I would presume the answer would be no... The reality is, we are all imperfect and working through our imperfections, whilst upon the ‘Potter’s Wheel’ of life, a process which happens on earth as well as in eternity. Taking this perspective and point of view, one starts to realise the whole subject is great, and holds a complexity greater than our own lives. Yes, we are important, there again, so is everyone else – no one is greater or lesser in the measurement of eternity. Even so, taking a view that we get bad things in this life because of a past life is very narrow minded and singular in thought. We are part of the whole movement of life and there is a greater picture that just “I”. Try to take a step back, and look at the purpose of life; one would hope we all gain from our mistakes if you believe you are in some way paying in this life through “Karma”.
With Karma, reference is often given to 'Causality' or 'Causation': this links with an ‘event’ known as the ‘cause', and a second event which is believed to a 'consequence' of the first. This process is often referred to as “Cause and Effect”. The consequence of ‘Cause and Effect’ is a natural one, appertaining to many things within the movement of life... The problem when opening a subject like reincarnation always falls upon an individual’s belief, religious views, or philosophical assertions. This opens a problematic perspective; as such, I believe the subject should be taken, or left, owing to the individual’s discretion, values and inclinations. Nonetheless, I have placed a 7th Century text, from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad; I hope it helps you.
according as he acts and according as he behaves, so will he be;
a man of good acts will become good, a man of bad acts, bad;
he becomes pure by pure deeds, bad by bad deeds;
And here they say that a person consists of desires,
and as is his desire, so is his will;
and as is his will, so is his deed;
and whatever deed he does, that he will reap.
7th Century BC
Finally, I draw to your point of doing bad things in a past life. It really depends on what you term bad, and does your actions of today work as a counterbalance? I believe you are looking too deeply into this subject, and if you are not careful, using the past to obscure today and your future. Please don’t rely upon yesterday, look at what you can achieve in the days to come. The past is the past, you cannot change what has gone, but through positivity you can improve the outcome that lies ahead.
Peace and fortitude for the days to come.
In Light and Peace
If you wish to look at the whole subject of ‘Karma’ and ‘Reincarnation’ perhaps you might want to look at my website and the post – “The Enigma of Reincarnation”, this might help you understand the subject a little more....
