History:
In 1853, five years after the Hydesville Rapping’s had led to Modern Spiritualism, Darlington-born David Richmond (1816- 1891) returned from America and tried to introduce Spiritualism to a less than enthusiastic town. Darlington was a stronghold of ‘Quakers’ and so David left. He travelled to Keighley in North Yorkshire and there opened the first Spiritualist Church in the UK. He returned later and opened a Church in Darlington, little is known of its early history, except that there were several circles held in private homes during those early years. In 1909, a Spiritualists Hall was built in Bondgate, used for regular services and Lyceums for young and old. After moving a few times during almost a century, in 1999 the Church moved to its present situation in Denmark Street.
