The Psychic Medium and Mediumship
By:Paul Andrew Todd

Mediumship is the ability to communicate with people who have passed away. The term medium is used because the psychic medium is between the spirit of the dead person and the living person they are communicating with. In others words they are in the middle of the two. Mediumship has been practiced since the beginning of recorded history and by all known ancient civilizations. Eastern cultures have a wide and varied record of mediumship and even the Hebrew scriptures give accounts of the psychic medium. Mediumship was for many civilizations an excepted and normal occurrence.

For a person to believe in mediumship they do not have to have a specific religious faith or even believe in god, but there are some things they do need to admit. These are that the soul exists separate from the body and continues on after death. Also a person needs to feel it is possible for the soul of a departed person to communicate with living humans. Through the psychic medium, the souls of those who have died can make themselves known to us. The person who is interested in mediumship, whether learning or seeing a medium should not believe blindly, but take every precaution to disprove what they are experiencing. It is also worth mentioning that people who gain the gift of mediumship retain the gift after death. It is these people or spirits that communicate and act as mediums for those on the spirit world side.

It is possible for anyone to develop the power of mediumship just as it is possible to learn to play a musical instrument. There are some differences in becoming a psychic medium verses developing a persons telepathic psychic abilities. In mediumship a person must learn to give themselves over to the communicating spirit and allow that spirit to work through the psychic mediums body. The spirit can work through the persons body through the method of talking, writing, typing or other ways. The person who does want to learn mediumship should not worry about hurting themselves mentally or physically. Mediumship is a perfectly normal occurrence and should not be feared. It should be noted that, not all spirits will be helpful or even the type you want to associate with. Just like people on earth, spirits can be egotistical, domineering and have a host of other character flaws.

Spirits can communicate through two basic avenues. These are physical phenomena and mental phenomena. Physical phenomena can take the form of direct writing on paper, physical objects passing through other physical objects, levitation of the psychic medium, materialization and direct voices. It is possible that these things can happen without a psychic medium, but not nearly as likely. It is believed the spirit is able to perform these physical acts by drawing on the energy of the medium.

Mental phenomena can take the form automatic writing or drawing, the psychic medium being able to see or hear the spirit, control of the medium by the spirit and prophetic predictions from the spirit. A interesting form of mental phenomena is automatic writing. This is where a piece of paper and pen or a small chalk board with chalk is placed in the same room as the psychic medium. The medium then contacts the spirit and the spirit will write a message or draw on the paper. The paper does not need to be next to the psychic medium and the room can be fully lighted.

The psychic medium usually goes into a trance state when in communication with spirits. It is believed this state is helpful, but not necessary for the psychic medium to obtain the correct mental vibration for communication. Many times the term trance is misunderstood. The trance does not need to be a state where the person losses complete control and awareness. Typically the trance is a light state where the person is fully aware of the surroundings and what is going on. This state would be similar to someone who is in a deep daydream.

Most psychic mediums develop the gift of mediumship over a long period. The psychic medium tends to pass through several different stages in their development. At first they may only experience some knocks, then they may feel the need to write with the spirit having influence. As they become more advanced the spirit may begin to talk through the psychic medium. The spirit talking through the medium first develops as a word or two that are not understandable, then over time the words become clearer and begin to form sentences. It is not uncommon for several different spirits to take turns talking through the psychic medium.
