Animals Have Souls, Too

A Pet's Prayer

A Pet's Prayer

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
The pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, canít be won

You will be sad, I understand
Donít let this grief then stay your hand
For this day, more than the rest
Your love and friendship stands the test

Weíve had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no tears
You donít want me to suffer so
When the time comes, please let me go

Take me where my needs, theyíll tend
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see

It is a kindness you do to me
When you, at last, have set me free
Although my tail, itís last has waved
From pain and suffering Iíll be saved

Donít grieve that it should be you
Who decides this thing you have to do
Weíve been close, these many years
Donít let your heart hold any fears

Please donít cry, for me a Smile
For we walked together for a while
And when you know that I have gone
Know that my love goes on and on

I thank you for doing what must be done
Easing my end, so the pain is gone
The animal world has spirits too
And one day, Iíll be back with you
